Residents Enjoy a Wonderful Day Out to Smithills Farm

At Ambleside Bank Care Home, we believe that meaningful activities and community outings play an important role in supporting wellbeing, independence, and quality of life. Recently, our residents enjoyed a fantastic day trip to Smithills Farm in Bolton, following a suggestion made during one of our regular residents' meetings.

Listening to the wishes and interests of our residents is central to life at Ambleside Bank, and staff were delighted to organise an outing that proved to be both enjoyable and memorable for everyone involved.

A Day of Animals, Fresh Air and New Experiences

Upon arriving at Smithills Farm, residents were warmly welcomed and quickly immersed themselves in the sights, sounds, and atmosphere of the countryside. The visit offered a wonderful opportunity to spend time outdoors, enjoy some fresh air, and experience the farm's friendly and interactive environment.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting the farm's animals. Residents particularly enjoyed getting up close to a variety of animals and learning more about their care and daily routines. The hands-on nature of the experience encouraged conversation, engagement, and plenty of smiles throughout the day.

Alpacas Steal the Show

Among all the animals, the alpacas quickly became firm favourites. Their gentle nature and curious personalities attracted lots of attention from residents, who enjoyed watching them and learning more about them.

The alpacas sparked laughter, conversation, and many photo opportunities, creating special moments that residents continued to talk about long after the visit.

Encouraging Reminiscence and Social Connection

As well as providing entertainment, the trip encouraged reminiscence and meaningful conversations. Seeing the farm animals brought back memories for many residents, who shared stories of growing up in rural communities, visiting farms with family members, or working with animals earlier in life.

These shared memories created natural opportunities for social interaction and helped strengthen friendships among residents. Outings such as these are an important part of our activities programme, supporting emotional wellbeing while encouraging connection and engagement.

Supporting Wellbeing Through Meaningful Activities

At Ambleside Bank, we recognise the positive impact that regular outings and stimulating activities can have on physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. The visit to Smithills Farm provided residents with a change of scenery, gentle exercise, sensory stimulation, and the chance to enjoy a relaxed day together outside the home.

One resident summed up the experience perfectly, saying:

"It was lovely to get out and see the animals up close again."
