A Pyjama Afternoon at Ambleside Bank Care Home – Comfort, Connection and Compassion in Practice

At Ambleside Bank, we believe exceptional care is about more than meeting physical needs – it’s about creating moments of comfort, reassurance and genuine human connection. Recently, during an unexpected and quieter afternoon in our home, our team demonstrated exactly what person-centred care looks like in practice.

A Calm Setting During Challenging Circumstances

On this particular day, several residents were experiencing minor illnesses, low mood and general fatigue. As a precaution to protect everyone’s health and wellbeing, we temporarily closed the home to visitors to reduce the risk of infection.

The atmosphere felt noticeably quieter than usual. Our team quickly recognised that while physical symptoms were mild, residents needed increased emotional reassurance, warmth and gentle engagement.

At Ambleside Bank Care Home, we know that emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical health – especially during times of uncertainty.

Recognising the Need for Comfort and Reassurance

Our staff identified that residents would benefit from:

  • Increased emotional support and reassurance

  • Opportunities to relax in a pressure-free environment

  • Gentle social interaction

  • A warm, nurturing atmosphere to lift morale

Maintaining dignity and personal choice remained central to our approach. Even on difficult days, residents must feel valued, safe and in control of their routines.

The “Pyjama Afternoon” – A Simple but Meaningful Idea

To bring comfort and connection back into the home, the team created a calm and cosy “Pyjama Afternoon.” The focus was on warmth, relaxation and shared enjoyment.

Choice and Dignity

Residents were offered the option to remain in their pyjamas or change into day clothes. Many chose to stay in their pyjamas, embracing the cosy, homely atmosphere. This simple choice empowered residents and helped them feel relaxed and at ease.

Warm, Comforting Drinks

Residents enjoyed warm “hot toddy-style” drinks, with non-alcoholic alternatives available. These soothing drinks provided warmth, hydration and a sense of indulgence.

Picky Treats and Light Snacks

A selection of easy-to-eat, comforting snacks was served, allowing residents to enjoy small portions at their own pace. The relaxed approach removed any pressure and encouraged gentle social interaction.

A Familiar Favourite on Screen

The classic film Gone with the Wind was shown in the lounge. This well-loved favourite sparked reminiscence, conversation and shared memories. Familiar films often provide powerful emotional comfort, particularly for older adults, creating a sense of normality and nostalgia.

Extra TLC and One-to-One Time

Most importantly, staff dedicated additional one-to-one time with residents. Blankets were offered, hands were held, and quiet conversations took place. These small but meaningful gestures provided reassurance and strengthened bonds between residents and carers.

The Positive Impact on Residents

The results of the Pyjama Afternoon were immediate and heartwarming:

  • Residents appeared more relaxed and comfortable

  • Smiles and laughter returned to the lounge

  • Conversations and shared memories flowed naturally

  • Several residents said they felt “looked after” and even “spoilt”

  • Anxiety levels reduced, and residents settled more easily later in the day

  • The home maintained a calm and nurturing atmosphere despite temporary closure

This experience demonstrated how thoughtful, person-centred care can transform even the quietest or most challenging days.

What This Taught Us About Quality Care

The Pyjama Afternoon reinforced some important principles that guide our approach at Ambleside Bank Care Home:

Flexibility and Creativity Matter

Quality residential care means adapting to residents’ needs in real time. Sometimes the best solution isn’t a structured activity – it’s comfort, warmth and togetherness.

Emotional Wellbeing Is Essential

Supporting mental and emotional health is just as important as treating physical symptoms. Feeling safe, valued and connected makes a profound difference.

Simple Moments Can Be Powerful

A familiar film, a warm drink, a cosy blanket or an unhurried chat can significantly improve wellbeing. Meaningful care doesn’t always require grand gestures – just compassion and attentiveness.

Compassion in Action at Ambleside Bank

At Ambleside Bank Care Home, we are proud of our team’s ability to respond with empathy and creativity. The “Pyjama Afternoon” is a wonderful example of how small, thoughtful actions can create comfort, connection and security — even during uncertain times.

If you are looking for a warm, person-centred care home where dignity, choice and emotional wellbeing are prioritised every day, we would be delighted to welcome you to Ambleside Bank.
