At Ambleside Bank Care Home, we believe every day should offer opportunities for joy, connection, and meaningful experiences. As part of our commitment to enhancing resident wellbeing, we recently organised a special day out to the Liverpool Empire Theatre to watch the much-loved musical Calamity Jane.
Residents Ethel and Diane were accompanied by caring staff members Jo and Jade, who helped make the day a truly memorable occasion.

Planning & Anticipation
From the moment the outing was announced, excitement filled the home. Both Ethel and Diane are lifelong lovers of music and theatre, and they eagerly counted down the days until the show. Their anticipation created a positive buzz throughout Ambleside Bank Care Home, with other residents joining in the conversations about favourite musicals and theatre memories.
The trip became more than just an outing — it was something to look forward to, boosting morale and creating shared excitement within the home.

Challenges & Solutions
On the day of the trip, unforeseen transport issues threatened to put the outing on hold. However, thanks to the quick thinking and dedication of Angela, who swiftly arranged a private taxi at short notice, the group was able to travel to Liverpool as planned.
Her resourcefulness ensured that Ethel and Diane didn’t miss out on this long-anticipated experience. A heartfelt thank you goes to Angela for her crucial role in making the day possible — a true example of teamwork and our staff’s commitment to going the extra mile for our residents.

The Experience
Upon arrival at the Liverpool Empire, Ethel and Diane were captivated by the theatre’s lively atmosphere. As the curtain rose on Calamity Jane, both residents were visibly delighted — singing along, clapping, and smiling throughout the performance.
The show’s familiar tunes and energetic cast brought waves of nostalgia and joy. Jo and Jade provided outstanding support, ensuring both residents felt comfortable, relaxed, and able to fully enjoy every moment of the day.

Impact on Residents
The trip had a lasting emotional impact on everyone involved:
- Ethel shared how much she loved the music, saying it reminded her of her younger years attending shows.
- Diane said she felt “like a teenager again,” expressing pure delight from start to finish.
- Both residents returned home uplifted, animated, and full of conversation about their favourite scenes.
Moments like these highlight how cultural and social experiences can spark joy, stimulate memories, and bring a renewed sense of purpose and belonging to residents.

Conclusion
This outing was a clear success — a day filled with laughter, teamwork, and shared happiness. It demonstrated how flexibility, dedication, and person-centred care can turn challenges into cherished memories.
At Ambleside Bank Care Home, we remain dedicated to providing enriching opportunities that celebrate individuality and promote emotional and social wellbeing. Whether through theatre trips, community visits, or creative in-home activities, our goal is always the same: to help our residents live life to the fullest.
