Dan the Therapy Dog Makes the Local News After Helping Resident “Find His Spark Again”

At Gillibrand Hall Care Home, we see moments of joy every day — but recently, one very special member of our team has been making headlines for the difference he’s bringing to residents’ lives.

Dan, our much-loved golden retriever therapy dog, has recently appeared in the local news after his visits helped one resident settle into care and reconnect with something deeply meaningful: the love of dogs.

And honestly? We’re not surprised. 🐶💛

A Difficult Transition Into Care

Moving into a care home can be a huge life change.

For 84-year-old resident John Weller, it was especially difficult. John moved into Gillibrand Hall a few months ago and initially struggled to settle, feeling low and missing the routines and comfort of his previous home.

But there was one thing John missed most of all…

His dogs.

John had to leave behind his beloved pets — Rocky, a miniature schnauzer, and Jovi, his whippet — and staff quickly noticed how much this loss affected his mood and confidence.

Then Dan Arrived

When Dan the golden retriever began visiting Gillibrand Hall regularly, the impact was immediate.

John lit up.

Speaking about Dan, John said:

“Seeing Dan makes me happy. Stroking him and feeding him treats reminds me of my own dogs.”

John keeps photos of Rocky and Jovi in his bedroom and looks at them often — and now he looks forward to Dan’s visits as something to brighten his day.

A Bond That Brought Confidence Back

Our team noticed that John’s confidence began to grow as his bond with Dan deepened.

As a care home spokesperson explained, Dan’s visits not only lifted John’s spirits, but also brought back warm memories of his time with his own pets — creating a sense of comfort and familiarity during a difficult transition.

It’s a powerful reminder that wellbeing in care is about more than physical health.

It’s about connection.

“Some Even Weep With Joy”

Dan’s owner, Fiona Hill, has seen first-hand the emotional effect Dan has on residents.

She shared:

“Dan is very gentle — albeit a bit giddy sometimes — and he seems to instinctively know how to respond to each resident.”

Fiona also described how Dan’s arrival can be deeply moving:

“Some even weep with joy when he arrives. The residents love sharing stories about their own pets, which can be emotional at first, but often spark happy conversations and laughter.”

She added:

“Dan really helps them open up and, as his owner, I’m so proud of the comfort he brings.”

Employee of the Month 🏆

Dan has become such an important part of life at Gillibrand Hall that he was recently awarded Employee of the Month.

Care Home Manager Kathy Spencer said:

“Dan has made a huge difference to residents like John.”

She added:

“John’s confidence and mood have lifted so much since meeting Dan. For him, pet therapy isn’t just about reducing anxiety — it’s about reconnecting with his passion for dogs and those happy memories.”
“The bond they share brings him comfort and calm.”

Why Pet Therapy Matters in Care

Dan’s story highlights something we strongly believe at Gillibrand Hall: Small moments can make the biggest difference.

Pet therapy can:

  • reduce anxiety and stress

  • support emotional wellbeing

  • encourage conversation and social interaction

  • trigger positive memories

  • help residents feel calm, connected and comforted

For residents like John, Dan’s visits are not just a nice activity — they are a lifeline back to confidence, identity and joy.

A Very Good Boy, Making a Very Real Difference

We are incredibly proud of Dan, and we’re thrilled to see his impact being recognised beyond our home.

But more than anything, we’re proud of residents like John — and the courage it takes to settle into a new chapter of life.

If Dan can help make that chapter brighter, calmer, and filled with smiles… then we’ll happily keep the treats coming.
