Kitchen Assistant – Ambleside Bank


Location: Ambleside Bank Care Home

Hours: 15 hours per week

Shift Pattern: 2 x 7.5-hour shifts, 10:00am–6:00pm

Pay: £13.00 per hour

Contract: Permanent


About the Role

Ambleside Bank Nursing Home is looking for a Kitchen Assistant to join our friendly and supportive catering team.


Working alongside our Chef, you will help prepare and serve nutritious, varied and enjoyable meals for our residents, while ensuring the kitchen is maintained to a high standard of cleanliness and food safety.


This is an ideal opportunity for someone who is practical, organised and enjoys working as part of a team. Previous kitchen or catering experience is beneficial, but a positive attitude and willingness to learn are equally important.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Chef with the preparation of varied, nutritious and appetising meals for residents.

  • Help serve meals and ensure residents’ individual dietary requirements are understood and followed.

  • Support residents to have choice and ensure they are treated with dignity and respect at mealtimes.

  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness.

  • Follow HACCP, COSHH, Health & Safety, Food Safety and Environmental Health requirements.

  • Clean and tidy all areas of the kitchen using the correct products and cleaning procedures.

  • Follow kitchen cleaning schedules and ensure tasks are completed to a high standard.

  • Ensure kitchen equipment is used safely and report any faults or damage promptly.

  • Receive, unload and store food deliveries appropriately.

  • Rotate stock correctly to maintain freshness and minimise waste.

  • Support the Chef with effective stock control.

  • Work positively as part of the wider home team and attend meetings and training sessions as required.

  • Maintain all mandatory training.

  • Participate in supervision, training and appraisal.

  • Maintain confidentiality regarding residents and staff.

  • Promote the safeguarding and wellbeing of residents at all times.

  • Undertake any other reasonable duties requested by the Chef or Registered Manager.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate, or willingness to obtain one.

  • Knowledge of basic food preparation.

  • Understanding of stock control and stock rotation.

  • Ability to safely use and maintain catering and cleaning products.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
