At Ambleside Bank, we are committed to delivering truly person-centred care — care that recognises and respects every individual’s background, culture, and unique needs. Leokadia’s journey is a wonderful example of how thoughtful, innovative support can help someone settle into a new environment and feel safe, valued, and understood.

A New Beginning in a New Country

When Leokadia could no longer be cared for in her home in Poland, her granddaughter — who lived locally — chose Ambleside Bank so she could remain close to family.

Moving countries later in life can be a significant change, and from the moment she arrived it was clear that communication would be one of the biggest challenges:

  • Leokadia did not speak English

  • Staff did not speak Polish

Despite this, our team was determined to ensure her transition was as comfortable and dignified as possible.

Overcoming Language Barriers with Person-Centred Support

To build trust and ensure Leokadia felt understood, staff introduced a range of practical and creative communication strategies:

✓ Learning Key Polish Phrases

Our team learned essential Polish words and phrases used in daily care, such as “breakfast,” “coffee,” and “cold.” These small efforts made a big difference and helped build familiarity and reassurance.

✓ Using Visual and Digital Communication Tools

Flashcards and translation apps were used to support conversations around daily routines and personal needs, helping Leokadia feel confident and in control.

✓ Music as a Universal Language

Music quickly became a powerful connection tool. Staff discovered that Leokadia knew many familiar songs — especially Christmas carols. Singing and listening together created joyful shared moments, strengthened relationships, and supported her sense of belonging.

✓ Community Connections

To help Leokadia stay connected to her culture, staff reached out to other care homes to find Polish residents nearby. While none were identified, Polish-speaking care assistants volunteered to speak with her via FaceTime. Hearing and speaking her native language brought comfort and familiarity.

✓ Truly Personalised Care

Beyond language, staff spent time getting to know Leokadia’s story, personality, and preferences. Understanding what she enjoyed — and what made her feel at ease — ensured she continued to feel respected and independent in her new home.

A Smooth Transition & A Strong Sense of Belonging

Thanks to the dedication and creativity of the team, Leokadia settled into Ambleside Bank quickly and confidently. The proactive support she received helped minimise the impact of the language barrier and fostered trust, comfort, and emotional wellbeing.

What Leokadia’s Story Teaches Us

Her experience highlights the importance of flexibility, cultural awareness, and compassion in care settings — especially when language differences exist. By combining practical tools, empathy, and shared human experiences like music, our team delivered meaningful connection and person-centred care.

At Ambleside Bank, we believe that language should never be a barrier to feeling at home. Leokadia’s journey reminds us that understanding goes beyond words — it lives in patience, creativity, and kindness.
